Ella Fitzgerald TributeSunday, April 11, 2010, 7:30PMStrand Theatre
On Saturday, April 12, 1980, York County was abuzz in anticipation of the grand opening of the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. The newly renovated theater’s inaugural gala featured a sold out performance by jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald, complete with red carpet, and searchlights that lit up the sky. Celebrate this special anniversary as we relive that memorable, magical night of 30 years ago with A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald starring Freda Payne. The soul, jazz, and R&B vocalist, best known for her million-selling hit single Band of Gold, pays tribute to the “First Lady of Song” as no one else can! Payne, the star of Broadway shows such as Jelly's Last Jam, Sophisticated Ladies and Blues in the Night, conjures the spirit of Ella with renditions of A-Tisket, A-Tasket, Sweet Georgia Brown, It Don't Mean a Thing, Mack the Knife and many other Fitzgerald classics. Read a review from Freda's tribute to Ella performance in Philadelphia. Payne bears a remarkable resemblance to the legendary singer’s sound, and has mastered the wordless scatting style developed by Ella. - VARIETY Sample Freda's performance here:
